The quick answer
Open Gan, tap each country you've been to, and it turns a colour. That's your countries visited map.
Your total goes up as you tap. Tap a country again and it switches off, so mistakes cost you nothing.
The map is free. It lives on the device you use, so there's no sign-up before you start.
How to make yours in five steps
Start with the places you remember best. The rest comes back as you scroll around.
- Open the map in your browser
- Tap every country you've properly visited
- Zoom into Europe or the Caribbean for the small ones
- Check the running total
- Save it to your account if you want it on every device
More than one colour
Most maps give you one state: been there. Gan gives you three.
Visited, planned and wishlist all sit on the same map. You see where you've been and where you're going at a glance.
Planned trips and the wishlist are part of the £4.99 a year plan.
- Visited: the countries you've actually stood in
- Planned: the trips you've got booked or half-booked
- Wishlist: the places you keep daydreaming about
Call it what you like
Visited countries map, map of countries I've visited, world map of everywhere you've been. It's the same thing.
Tap a country, watch it change colour, and you've got a map you can show off.
Pick your own colours
Change the colours for your visited and wishlist countries. Make them yours, or your football team's.
Region maps use the same colours, so everything matches.
Flat map or globe
Switch between a flat world map and a 3D globe. Zoom in on a continent when you want a closer look.
Tiny countries get their own markers, so Monaco and Malta don't vanish.
What counts as a country?
Gan lists 200 places to tick off. England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland each count separately.
Kosovo and Taiwan are on the list too. Overseas territories stay off your total unless you turn them on.
Not sure where to draw the line? Read how to count countries visited and pick a rule.
Smaller maps inside the big one
Want more detail on home turf? Gan has region maps for England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and Ireland.
You can tick off areas as well as countries.
Share it or keep it private
Your map is private by design. Switch on a public link only if you want one.
Prefer to compare with a few friends? Add them and see whose map is bigger. Friends can view your map but never edit it.
